Design Factory
The former locksmith workshop of the Apollo refinery, the later ZSE (Slovak electricity and gas supplier) assembly hall, had been given a new chance to survive in 2005 when the original industrial atmosphere was revived by three architects Martin Paško, Zoran Michalčákand and Zuzana Zacharová. The goal of the conversion was to create a new creative basis for the support and development of timeless design and architecture. The restoration respected the basic material and disposition of the original building. It has received several awards for its architectural value.
The cultural space Design factory had been offering its atmosphere to commercial and non-commercial events for 15 years. It was included in the cultural map of the capital mainly as the first gallery of architecture. The Design factory is not only an example of the first successful conversion of an unprotected industrial, but it is also the first event space to be created on the city grounds without state support. According to the Center for Scientific and Technical Information, since 2014 it has been included among the renowned institutions in the field of curation.
The Municipal Institute for the Protection of Monuments in Bratislava, which carried out archival research, pointed to the fact that, at present, only a minimum of similar buildings have been preserved due to the demise of entire production districts and factory premises. Therefore, the Design factory building has the value of uniqueness in terms of occurrence today and it is necessary to preserve and protect it. The city of Bratislava included the building in the list of city monuments in October 2019.
